18 Nov Thanksgiving is Approaching!
Thanksgiving is approaching. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your child’s listening and language skills. Here are some ideas and tips for holiday:
Use LOTS of language with your child as you prepare for the holiday! The rich vocabulary that comes along with Thanksgiving is endless! Just to name a few….
Think about the food you will be preparing and everything involved in the process. Words such as turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, ingredients, recipe, cook, bake, fry, and oven.
Think about the friends and family who will be attending… Words such as family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins.
Talk about the sequence of events necessary for cooking the food, setting the table, traveling to friends/family, or preparing the house for your guests.
Engage in conversation with your child about which Thanksgivings foods he/she likes or dislikes (but not in front of your host!!) and have your child ask everyone in your family for THEIR opinion about the food they like.
Take lots of pictures of the event so you can make an experience book (and talk about it for weeks afterward with everyone your child meets)!
Remember: Family gatherings can be noisy! This may be overwhelming for your child with hearing loss. He/she may need a break from the noise and a quieter place to have a conversation.
HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!!
